I was keen on finishing up some experiments I had started and also working on some new ones. I took the beat cloth designs I experimented with and worked on them with Mandela and Aminu –– the two main weavers I work with on this project. I was eager to see if this experiment made was possible at all and if it even made sense. Another experiment I wanted to do was to use the loom as an instrument. I wanted to create a situation where the weaver used the loom to back an artist, Pure Akan, while he spontaneously freestyled. Upon speaking with both weavers about this experiment, I got two very different answers. Mandela told me it would be a complex experiment. However, he was willing to try it out. On the other hand, Aminu felt like it’d be a pretty easy experiment, So we pinned the date and scheduled the time and place for the experiment. The motif library was another sub-project I wanted to see come to life. I wanted to work with the weavers in building this library that once kind of existed. Kente is one of those things. It requires a deliberate pace and intentionality. When I started this project, I realized how the speed amongst different weavers varied. Some weavers were extremely fast, and others were moderately paced. Their varying speeds ultimately did not change what the cloth looked like; neither did it always point to how long someone had been weaving. For me, what I realized was how the speed changed the weaving sounds. Different tempos created different rhythms but gave the same output. This was extremely fascinating. I believed that the weaving sounds possessed some innate power that could be investigated and used to make new designs. Focusing mainly on this meant I had to dive deeper to understand further the Kente cloth's significance, conception, and life cycle. While on this journey, I uncovered many new things, although this cloth has been a part of my life ever since I was a child. My explorations thus far led me to concentrate on three main things that every weaver deals with –– Context, Materiality, and Technique. By further breaking down these categories, I gained more insights into the meaning of this cloth. All these three categories directly affected any given new Kente design, and within each category, you could see its direct effect. For instance, a weaver, going through some hardships, may want to design a cloth that speaks to that experience. This then tests his technique because he may want to design and depict some motifs that closely refer to specific things he's experiencing. Only then can he interact with materiality and start weaving this cloth. After going through this process with different master weavers, it became clear how intentionality and deliberation are vital to the cloth's success. So in a way, this was contradictory to my initial goal of repurposing the weaving sounds to make new designs because it was not very helpful in furthering the cloth. My initial goal rids the cloth of specific vital components that make the cloth what it is. Although I had a holistic view of the Kente lifecycle, I focused on creating more designs and the rapid production of more designs and not really maintaining the cloth's integrity. Like many developments nowadays, instant results and speed became my measure of success for making new designs. Knowing this prompted me to adjust my process and work on a couple of experiments with a new strategy. Still maintaining the weaving sounds as my driver for coming up with new designs, I explored the idea of coming up with intentional beats to inform semi-intentional designs.' Semi' because I used the beat sequence patterns as my basis for the designs. I focused on specific elements that make the kente design what it is –– elements like color, repetition, grids, and motifs. With this experiment, I had two main categories –– designs made to be woven and designs made for prints. I made these two distinctions because I wanted to try out designs that would use photos and help extend the life of the music it was based on. As a woven cloth, this will still work, but when worn as a garment, the meaning totally changes. I sampled and made the music with the Akai MPC Live, and I used the MPC Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) to view my sequences. This is also what I based my designs on because it is what I made the music with. Here I focused on building a language that the weavers could translate to use within the Kente loom. To build this coherence, I analyzed the sequence view and started translating certain aspects of the music to make it 'weavable'. First, I used the stole dimensions (5” x 72”) as the basis on which I built all the other elements. From here, I could now assign meaning to every element. My time signature most of the time was 4/4, and this made it easy to make every beat in a bar equivalent to a stole. This further meant that every 5 inches (Kente stole width) equaled a beat in a bar; hence every bar was equivalent to 4 stoles. This also meant that the number of tracks determined how long the stole would be. So, if I had 30 tracks, this meant the stole would be 30 inches long. working on several explorations and also engaging with the weavers I’ve worked on this project with. It became clear how being intentional was key to the shaping and construction of Kente. The weavers voice and touch should be seen in the cloth’s existence. More recent conversations I’ve had with weavers have touched on this more than ever. Their perception of the cloth isn’t one of randomness, it’s a very precise and delicate art. Nonetheless, this made me even more aware of the sound expelled during the weaving process as very precise also. However, no matter how meticulous the weaver can be, the sounds are never the same and this makes the sounds also very unique in nature, just like music. This understanding prompted me to focus on reverse engineering this process by focussing on making intentional sounds to come up with somewhat ‘random’ visuals. Here, just as I did in my early experiments with Logic Pro’s visual interface, I’m looking more closely at step sequencers, specifically that of the Akai MPC Live. This portable production station has been my primary space for chopping up the recorded samples I obtained. It has also been the my work station for producing the samples into beats by adding other elements as well. All these beats could be viewed as sequences in the interface, and the sequences have mapping grids that could be customized to be identical to that of Kente cloth dimensions. For this experiment my goal was to create beats sequences that informed specific cloth patterns. The added layer to this experiment was to make these ‘cloths’ with repurposed paper. This experiment was much more fulfilling because, I got working with my hands and also started thinking more about what each cloth, combined with different elements like photographs among other motifs could mean. While still keeping sound as the ultimate driving force. My starting point for this experiment focused on technique. I tried different ways, to weave together the paper I found, and it was interesting to see how the process I had broken my explorations into – Technique, Materiality and Context, were informing this experiments almost on its own. I didn’t actively have to think about doing this in order to apply it. My next steps were informed by the beats I had made. I looked closer at at the sequences and their grid, and used the parts filled with sound to be moments where motifs appeared. It was at this point where I felt the combination and relation of rhythm and visuals. They were informing each other and still leaving traces of memory in the work I was making. I feel this has something to do with my process of starting from a generative standpoint. Artificial intelligence, to me, really is just as the name suggests is intelligent, but its knowledge cannot necessarily surpass the understanding the weavers possess. I furthered my motif development by also looking at drone photos I took in Ghana over the years. The main difference I noticed was the almost organized chaotic moments in Ghana. The buildings do not necessarily follow a grid but still feel like they are on a grid when next to each other. The trees, the sea, and the ecological nature of things also seem to flow into many spaces. This got me thinking of how 'nature' may have a solid connection to my project. With this in mind, I'll further my motif studies through sound. +0000 Kenteverse https://kenteverse.com/All-Important-Symbolism All-Important Symbolism While in Ghana, I had fascinating interactions with the weavers I work with. Most times, the weavers wrapped these interesting moments in attempts to weave some of the generated designs. When given black &amp; white images of the new Kente designs, all the weavers I worked with returned with full-color samples. This proved how important color is to the meaning of any given kente cloth. Color and pattern became all-important, and symbolism was attached to both colors, patterns, and motifs. Names of the cloths can be derived from any source and may not correlate to their appearance. Together, the colors, patterns, shapes, and names combine to tell a story, an anecdote, a theme, or symbolize the wearer's clan, history, and specific set of values. With this in mind, I pushed harder on my motif experiments. I've so far created thirty motifs based on different experiences during my time in Basel and some aerial shots of certain places here. Through building this library, I'm creating visual elements and multiple stories through a combination of motifs, patterns, and colors. When worn, it is more than just a piece of attire; it is a visual representation of history, philosophy, ethics, religious belief, political thought, and oral story-telling._ April 05 2021 <img Kenteverse https://kenteverse.com/Notation-System Notation System Being in Ghana enormously fulfilled aspects of the KenteVerse I was not even avidly thinking about. I explored perspectives like language within Kente in the shorts I directed and shot ‘Dame-Dame’ and ‘Ɛse Ne Tɛkerɛma.’ This also gave way to seeing Kente as a fine fabric for life. Because within it is so many jam-packed pieces of information about who I am and where I can go. As I frequently interacted with the weavers, I got glimpses into how specific designs generated from the sound of weaving tally with designs that have already existed. Could the information not as visible as the final designs hold valuable codes to life in general? These questions have further led me to musical forms like jazz that share heavy visual relations with Kente. Even looking at the "Time Unit Box Notation System" (developed by Koetting and Harland to represent African music visually) and kente cloth, Kente and Jazz's relationship is so clear just by looking at that. Paul Austerlitz, the author of Jazz Consciousness: Music, Race, and Humanity, concludes that kente notation reveals "visual equivalents of Afro-diasporic music...because its colors synesthetically correlate with sonority to underscore the melodic color of rhythm". From the point of notation systems, I have further explored other forms of notation, studies, and investigations. One such study I have delved into is the study of chromosomes and what they look like under a light microscope –– Karyotyping. Karyotypes, to me, further validate my thoughts of Kente as being a fabric for life. Karyotypes bear a striking resemblance to Kente strips. From the colors, they possess to the different ways they are presented. Kente, as a whole, speaks to life, directs and educates as well. They represent specific characteristics of different cultures, just like chromosomes are to humans. Karyotypes' rhythmic nature heavily alludes to Kente, and this cannot be ignored.Is there more hidden in Kente, yet to be uncovered?
