Kenteverse

The Kenteverse is a multifaceted Art, Design & Music project exploring Kente’s innate power to create. I’m primarily using sounds sampled from the loom during the weaving process to generate new Kente designs and experiences.

When I started this project, I thought I was merely observing and dissecting the anatomy of Kente. I wasn’t aware of the fact that I was peering into a whole universe, The Kenteverse. Sound & Rhythm drove me here, and they’ve been my main points of contact in understanding the numerous locations within this universe. Language, History & Fashion are just some of the areas I’ve gained access to during my time here.

Experiment: Ɛse ne Tɛkerema

PureAkan, KLab and I observed the weaving process, sampled the sounds of the process, made instrumentals, and used more programming in tandem with the beats to develop new forms of the cloth.

This formed a base for us to introduce some storytelling aspect to expand perspectives around the cloth.

Now, we've fused some of our feelings, findings, and understandings in the form of spoken word and rap.

Using twi rap as our vessel, we were able to speak directly to the cloth because this is one of the languages the cloth speaks. This to us further diversified the project because now we had begun engaging Kente in many languages.
